About Prescription Stimulant Addiction Treatment in South Africa
What this looks like
Dependence on prescription stimulants, most often medication prescribed for ADHD such as methylphenidate (sold in the UK as Ritalin, Concerta or Equasym) or lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse), usually develops through taking more than prescribed, or using it without medical supervision, to get an effect such as heightened focus or energy. Signs include needing increasing amounts, using outside of medical guidance, and continuing despite it causing problems. This is a recognised pattern of dependence, and effective, medically supervised treatment is available.
What to expect day to day
A doctor assesses every client on arrival and a nurse oversees withdrawal from that point on. Stopping stimulants isn’t typically physically dangerous, but it commonly brings a “crash” (intense fatigue, low mood and strong cravings) that our medical team supports you through. Once this has settled, treatment moves into the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and CBT/DBT.
Talk to us about this in confidence. There's no obligation, and no one else sees your enquiry.

Questions
Can ADHD medication become addictive?
Prescription stimulants such as methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Equasym) or lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse) can lead to dependence, particularly when taken in higher doses than prescribed or without medical supervision. This can happen even when the medication started out treating a genuine need.
Is withdrawal from prescription stimulants dangerous?
It's not typically life-threatening, but it can cause a significant "crash" (extreme fatigue, low mood and intense cravings), which is why medical support during this period matters.
I still have ADHD, what happens to my treatment for that?
Our medical team can discuss this with you directly. Ongoing ADHD management is a conversation to have with our admissions team before you arrive, so a safe plan is in place.
How long does the stimulant "crash" last?
The most intense fatigue and low mood usually ease within the first week or two, though energy and mood can take longer to fully stabilise. Our nurse monitors this throughout.
