About Crystal Meth Addiction Treatment in South Africa
What this looks like
Crystal meth (methamphetamine) produces an intense, longer-lasting high than many other stimulants, and repeated use can escalate quickly. Signs of dependence include using more frequently or for longer binges, disrupted sleep, significant weight loss, and continuing use despite serious harm to health, relationships or work. Heavy or prolonged use can also trigger psychosis, including paranoia and hallucinations, which may persist even after use stops. It’s a recognised pattern of dependence, and effective, medically supervised treatment is available.
What to expect day to day
A doctor carries out a full health assessment on arrival, since heavy use can affect physical health, sleep and mental health, and a nurse supports clients through the withdrawal period. Coming off crystal meth typically brings a severe crash: exhaustion, low mood, intense cravings and disrupted sleep, easing over a couple of weeks though full recovery of mood and energy can take longer. Once this has settled, treatment moves into the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and CBT/DBT.

Questions
What does crystal meth withdrawal feel like?
The main effects are extreme fatigue, low mood, intense cravings and disrupted sleep in the days and weeks after stopping. It's mainly psychological rather than physically dangerous, but the crash can be severe and hard to manage alone.
How long does recovery from crystal meth use take?
The most intense crash usually eases within a couple of weeks, but mood, sleep and energy can take longer to fully recover. Our residential programme and aftercare are built around this longer arc of recovery, not just the initial days.
Does crystal meth cause lasting health problems?
Heavy or long-term use can affect physical and dental health, sleep and mental health. Our medical team carries out a full health assessment on arrival to understand what support you need.
Can crystal meth cause psychosis?
Yes. Heavy or prolonged use can trigger psychosis, including paranoia and hallucinations, and in some people symptoms can persist for a time after use stops. Our medical team assesses for this on arrival and brings in consulting psychologists or psychiatrists where needed.
Is crystal meth addiction treatable?
Yes. With medical support through withdrawal and a structured programme afterwards (the 12-step approach, therapy and aftercare), recovery is achievable.
