About Synthetic Cathinone Addiction Treatment in South Africa
What this looks like
Synthetic cathinones are lab-made stimulant drugs, including mephedrone, often sold as “legal highs” or as a stronger substitute for khat, with strength and exact makeup varying unpredictably between batches. Signs of dependence include needing more for the same effect, strong cravings, and continuing use despite serious harm to health, finances or relationships. It’s a recognised pattern of dependence, and effective, medically supervised treatment is available.
What to expect day to day
A doctor carries out a full health assessment on arrival, since the unpredictable strength of synthetic cathinones makes effects on the body harder to anticipate, and a nurse supports clients through the comedown, low mood, fatigue, anxiety and cravings. Once this has settled, treatment moves into the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and CBT/DBT.
Talk to us about this in confidence. There's no obligation, and no one else sees your enquiry.

Questions
What are synthetic cathinones?
Synthetic cathinones are lab-made stimulant drugs, including mephedrone, often sold as "legal highs", plant food, or as a stronger substitute for khat. Their strength and exact makeup can vary considerably between batches.
Is withdrawal from synthetic cathinones dangerous?
It's mainly a psychological crash, low mood, fatigue, anxiety and intense cravings, rather than classic physical withdrawal, but it can still be severe and hard to manage alone.
Are synthetic cathinones more dangerous than other stimulants?
They can be, largely because strength and purity vary so much from batch to batch, making effects unpredictable. Our medical team carries out a full health assessment on arrival to understand what's actually been used.
How long does the comedown last?
The most intense fatigue and low mood usually ease within the first week or two, though mood and sleep can take longer to fully settle. Our nurse monitors this throughout.
