About Sex Addiction Treatment in South Africa

What this looks like

Compulsive sexual behaviour becomes a concern when it feels out of the person’s control and continues despite real harm to relationships, work or daily life. Signs include escalating patterns over time, using the behaviour to cope with stress or difficult feelings, and significant distress or secrecy around it. It’s often connected to underlying difficulties such as anxiety, shame, low self-worth or past trauma, rather than being about the behaviour alone. None of this is a matter of moral failing: the World Health Organization recognises compulsive sexual behaviour disorder as a condition, and effective, confidential treatment is available.

What to expect day to day

Our clinical team assesses every client’s overall wellbeing on arrival, in a confidential, non-judgemental setting, since this is a subject many people find difficult to discuss, and involves consulting psychologists or psychiatrists where needed. There’s no substance involved, so there’s no medical detox. Much of the early work focuses on understanding what the behaviour has been serving, whether stress relief, escape or something else, before addressing it directly. From there, treatment moves into the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and CBT/DBT.

Talk to us about this in confidence. There's no obligation, and no one else sees your enquiry.

Questions

Is sex addiction a recognised condition?

The World Health Organization recognises compulsive sexual behaviour disorder as a condition when it feels out of control and continues despite real harm to relationships, work or daily life. It isn't a matter of shame or moral failing.

Is treatment confidential?

Yes, completely. Your enquiry and treatment are seen only by our admissions and clinical teams, and this is a subject many clients find difficult to talk about, so we treat it with particular care and discretion.

Is sex addiction connected to other issues?

It's often connected to underlying difficulties such as anxiety, shame, low self-worth, trauma or other compulsive patterns. Our clinical team addresses the whole picture, not just the specific behaviour.

What does treatment involve?

There's no substance involved, so there's no medical detox. Treatment focuses on the residential programme, addressing the underlying patterns and feelings driving the compulsion, in a confidential and non-judgemental setting.
