About Prescription Opioid Addiction Treatment in South Africa

What this looks like

Prescription opioid dependence has a distinct starting point: a legitimate prescription for pain, from a GP or after surgery, that continues for longer than intended. Over time, the body adapts, needing more of the drug for the same relief, a pattern that can develop in anyone taking these medications for long enough, entirely separate from how carefully they were originally used. Many people don’t recognise it as dependence at all, since it grew out of following medical advice, not seeking a high. It’s a recognised medical condition, not a failure of willpower, and effective, medically supervised treatment is available.

What to expect day to day

A doctor reviews exactly what’s been prescribed, for how long, and alongside what else, since combining opioids with other sedating medications changes the risk picture. From there, care follows the same medically supervised opioid detox described on our general opioid addiction page, then the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and CBT/DBT. Many clients also want to talk through pain management that doesn’t involve opioids, which our medical team can discuss as part of your care.

Talk to us about this in confidence. There's no obligation, and no one else sees your enquiry.

Questions

Can you become dependent on prescription painkillers even if a doctor prescribed them?

Yes. Dependence on opioid painkillers like codeine, tramadol or oxycodone can develop even when they're taken exactly as prescribed, especially over long periods. It isn't a matter of misuse or fault, since the drugs themselves are physically dependence-forming.

Is it dangerous to stop prescription opioids suddenly?

Stopping suddenly causes uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, and if you're also taking other sedating medications, such as benzodiazepines, or drinking alcohol, the combination can be genuinely dangerous. Medically supervised tapering or detox is the safer approach either way.

What if my GP doesn't know I've become dependent?

You don't need your GP's involvement to get help from us. Our admissions team can talk you through your situation in confidence, and our doctors manage your detox here.

Will I need painkillers again after treatment?

If you have an ongoing pain condition, our medical team can discuss non-opioid pain management options as part of your care. Every situation is different, and this is something to raise directly with our admissions team.
