About Gaming Addiction Treatment in South Africa

What this looks like

Gaming disorder is a recognised condition where gaming takes priority over other areas of life. Signs include losing control over how much time is spent gaming, gaming taking priority over relationships, work, education or self-care, and continuing despite clear harm to daily life. It’s often connected to underlying difficulties such as anxiety, low mood or social withdrawal. It’s a recognised condition, and effective, supported treatment is available.

What to expect day to day

Our clinical team assesses every client’s overall wellbeing on arrival, including any underlying anxiety, low mood or other difficulties that often accompany gaming disorder, and involves consulting psychologists or psychiatrists where needed. There’s no substance involved, so there’s no medical detox. Because gaming disorder often develops around routine and escape, from a stressful home, work or social situation, part of treatment means building a daily structure that doesn’t depend on gaming to cope. From there, treatment moves into the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and CBT/DBT.
