About Eating Disorder Treatment in South Africa

What this looks like

Eating disorders can take many forms, including restricting food, bingeing, purging, or a preoccupation with food, weight or body shape that takes over daily life. They’re recognised mental health conditions, not a choice or a phase, and often connected to deeper feelings such as anxiety, low self-worth or a need for control. They can also cause serious physical health risks, including effects on the heart and other organs. None of this reflects weakness: it’s a recognised condition, and effective, supported treatment is available.

What to expect day to day

A doctor carries out a full physical health assessment on arrival, since eating disorders can cause serious physical health risks, and our medical team monitors this throughout treatment. Eating disorder treatment is primarily provided at our Cape Manor House centre, though our admissions team can discuss your situation and what’s possible at our other centres too. Care includes the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and CBT/DBT, alongside close attention to physical and emotional wellbeing day to day.

Talk to us about this in confidence. There's no obligation, and no one else sees your enquiry.

Questions

Which eating disorders do you treat?

We support clients with a range of eating disorders. Our admissions team will talk through your specific situation and recommend whether our programme is the right fit, and if not, help point you towards more specialised support.

Which centre treats eating disorders?

Eating disorder treatment is primarily provided at our Cape Manor House centre in Cape Town, though our admissions team can discuss your situation and what's possible at our other centres too.

Are eating disorders just about food?

No. Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions, often connected to anxiety, low self-worth or a need for control, and food and body image become the visible part of a much deeper struggle.

Is medical monitoring part of treatment?

Yes. Eating disorders can cause serious physical health risks, so a doctor assesses every client's physical health on arrival, and our medical team monitors this throughout treatment.

What if I or someone I love is in immediate danger?

Please contact emergency services straight away. This website isn't an emergency service, and eating disorders can sometimes cause serious, fast-moving physical health risks that need urgent medical attention.
