About Alcohol Addiction Treatment in South Africa

What this looks like

Common signs of alcohol dependence include needing to drink more to get the same effect, feeling shaky, anxious or nauseous without a drink, being unable to cut down despite wanting to, and continuing to drink even when it’s causing problems at work, at home or in relationships. Some people drink alone or hide how much they’re drinking. None of this reflects a lack of willpower: dependence is a recognised medical condition, and effective, medically supervised treatment is available.

What to expect day to day

Withdrawal symptoms can begin within hours of the last drink and, for people who’ve been drinking heavily or for a long time, can escalate over the following days to include seizures, which is why we never recommend stopping suddenly without medical support. A doctor assesses every client on arrival, and a nurse oversees detox from that point on. Once detox is complete, treatment moves into the residential programme: group therapy, the 12-step programme, individual counselling, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT).

Talk to us about this in confidence. There's no obligation, and no one else sees your enquiry.

Questions

How do I know if I need alcohol rehab?

Signs that professional help may be needed include drinking more than intended, needing increasing amounts to feel the same effect, failed attempts to cut down, and continuing to drink despite it causing problems at home, work or in relationships. If you or someone you love is showing these signs, our admissions team can talk it through with you confidentially, with no obligation.

Is alcohol detox dangerous?

Withdrawal from alcohol can be dangerous, and in some cases life-threatening, which is why it should always happen under medical supervision. A doctor assesses each client, and a nurse oversees their detox throughout.

Can I detox from alcohol at home?

We wouldn't recommend it. Alcohol withdrawal can cause serious symptoms including seizures, and the risk is highest for people who drink heavily or for a long time. Medically supervised detox, with a doctor and nurse on hand, is the safer route.

How long does alcohol rehab last?

We offer a 28-day Standard programme and a 90-day Comprehensive programme. Both include medically supervised detox, the 12-step programme, individual counselling and aftercare once you're home.
